First birthday party planning: a calm, practical guide

First birthdays are lovely, but they're also easy to overthink. Here's a calm, realistic approach to planning one — the timings that work, the food that suits little ones, and how to keep the youngest guests entertained without exhausting yourself.

Keep it short

Two hours is plenty for a first birthday. Babies and toddlers tire quickly, and grandparents will thank you for it. Aim for something like 11am–1pm or 2pm–4pm to sit either side of nap time.

Give little ones a place to play

A dedicated play corner takes the pressure off entertaining a room of babies and toddlers. Our Little or Classic package sits neatly in a home lounge, gives the little ones space to explore, and lets parents actually sit down.

Food that suits everyone

Toddler-friendly finger food travels well: sandwiches, fruit, cheese cubes, cucumber sticks. Keep the cake simple — a smash cake for the birthday child, sponge slices for everyone else.

Photos to actually treasure

The nicest first-birthday photos are the calm, in-the-moment ones — the birthday child playing, grandparents watching, an aunty on the floor. A neutral soft-play setup photographs quietly in the background rather than fighting your styling.
