Outdoor birthday party ideas for little ones

A garden or outdoor venue gives toddlers room to roam, but it also adds variables: sun, wind, uneven ground and the great British forecast. A little planning makes the difference between a relaxed afternoon and a scramble.

Think about shade and surface first

Small children overheat quickly, so plan a shaded area — a gazebo, marquee or a spot under trees — before you plan anything else. A flat, clean, dry surface matters just as much for anywhere children will be sitting or crawling.

Have a genuine plan B

Decide in advance what happens if it rains: a marquee, a village hall, or moving the play area indoors. Making that call the day before is far less stressful than making it an hour before guests arrive.

Keep food and play separate

Outdoors it's easy to end up with picnic blankets in the middle of the play space. Set the food area to one side, with a clear path between the two, and you'll spend far less time picking crisps out of the grass.
